Parking in Edinburgh can be a problem, not to mention getting around due to a high volume of roadworks (new Tram system being the main contender). Bus services are very good (and economical with a day pass costing only GBP3.00) and walking around the City Centre is by far the easiest and best way. Tainted by childhood memories Edinburgh is very "walkable". Many guests elect to park their cars and forget about them whilst staying at Kingsview due to it being so well located. We have free parking available for guests (five doors down the road so we still enjoy having a front garden!). We can also offer secure lower ground parking at an apartment block (about 189 metres away), subject to availability, for which they charge only £8 a day.
Parking on Gilmore Place itself (i.e. in front of Kingsview) is allowed and free from 1830 hours to 0800 hrs Monday through Saturday and all day Sunday. Pay and display parking applies over the road and in adjoining streets from 0830 to 1730 Monday to Friday but is free and unlimited outwith these hours including all day Saturday and Sunday. For guests arriving prior to 1730 pay and display can be purchased (maximum four hours at £1.20) but carried over into the following day. Parking is unrestricted on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years day and Easter Monday.
Also five minutes drive and either a pleasant walk back along the canal or short bus journey (Lothian 10 or 27) allows parking outwith the peripheral zone which is unrestricted and again free.
For those arriving by train our nearest Rail Station is Haymarket which is actually walking distance but, due to it being less than straightforward, we tend to recommend the short taxi run. The main Rail Station is Waverley which is located at the East end of Princes Street and which again is a reasonable taxi run or alternatively bus number 10 from Princes Street beside the Scott's Monument or 27 from the foot of the Mound bring you into Gilmore Place. The landmark is to get off at the first stop after the bus turning right at the Kings Theatre - we are about 110 metres along on the right beyond he shops.
Coming from Edinburgh Airport a taxi will cost about £18 and takes about twenty minutes. The other options are that there is a very good express bus service which for £3.50 per person (or £6 return) will bring you into the West end of Princes Street (Shandwick Place) and crossing over the road, then turning right into Lothian Road at the Caledonian Hotel a number 10 will bring you to Gilmore Place. (£1.20 per person) There is a shuttle service operating from the airport (and back again) which will bring you to Kingsview at £10.00 for one person, £18 for two and then £5 per additional passenger. This is fine if you are on your own but otherwise you are better with a taxi which at least will bring you directly, as against the possible tour of other Edinburgh Guest Houses and Hotels. The Service does also offer a pick up for return to the Airport. The Taxi rank, by the way, is outside the Arrivals Terminal to the left and usually very efficient (we know from our own experience!). Lothian service bus number 35 now runs from the airport to an adjoining street to Gilmore Place but takes forty minutes. They do have space for luggage on the 35 and it costs only £1.20 per person or you can buy the Day Ticket for £3.00 which gives you unlimited travel on all Lothian buses, per note below. If using this service you get off in Fountainbridge and cross over the road, go down passage beside Cargoes Bar, along the left side of the Canal Basin, turn left at the accommodation block, up Lower Gilmore Place to crossroad then left along Gilmore Place. We are on the left about 80 metres down. The walk takes less than five minutes.
Local buses are good (Lothian) and a day pass at £3.00 per person (£2.40 children) gives you unlimited travel throughout the City and surrounding areas even including Roslin Chapel, Musselburgh, Penicuik, Leith (Royal Yaucht Britania, etc) and of course the 35 to the Airport. We are fortunate in having what is probably the biggest Taxi operation in Edinburgh based just up the road from us - CENTRAL TAXIS 0131 229 2468 and also enjoy excellant prompt service from CITY CABS 0131 228 1211. Recently we have in fact been using City Cabs most of the time without any problems. We have also been using a private Hire opeator Capital Cars 0131 622 6000 who have fleet of 4, 6, 7 & 8 seater vehicles. They offer a fixed rate transfer to-and-from the Airport of £18 for the four seater cars and £25 for the larger vehicles.
